Mare Care

We have decided to provide mare care at Woodcroft Pony Stud. Our facilities are amazing for pregnant mares. We have a Supervision Barn and as this is a breeding barn, our staff are all trained and experienced in looking after mares. We have a live-in vet and I am a professional breeder which means that if anything goes wrong in your mare's pregnancy, we are experts and there is a good chance that we can help your mare and unborn foal. At Woodcroft Pony Stud, we don't just provide a top quality service with fully trained staff, we provide peace of mind. You know that your horse is in the best place at the right time. Here are some more details on what we provide:
  • Turnout - Each mare is turned out for at least 3 hours each day. If the weather is exceptionally bad, we will turn the mares out in the indoor school when it is not been used. We give the pregnant mares individual paddocks as we don't want a pregnant mare to be kicked. However, on occassions we have sectioned off a part of the field and put a mare in with a companion mare who we trust to be gentle. For more information on our fields, look at Pastures and Paddocks
  • Stabling - If there is a problem with the pregnancy or we feel it is high risk, then your mare will be kept in the supervision barn all the time. However, most healthy mares aren't transferred until the last month of pregnancy, so usually, mares are kept in the regular barn where they will be surrounded by other horses and will have more to interest them when they are in.
  • Exercise - You know your horse. If you want, we will lunge your horse and even lightly ride and school it if we agree there is no risk. Many mares enjoy been lightly exercised while they are pregnant and it keeps them fit and healthy. Any pregnant mares here are only shown in halter classes and you must enter them and transport them if you want them shown.
  • Feeding - We have a usual diet for all our mares. However, we will try and feed your horse whatever she was getting fed before, making only slight adaptions while she is pregnant. If you want her on a specific diet, please let us know. All feed, hay and water is provided in unlimited amounts.
  • Stable Management - Your horse will be attended on by one of our experienced grooms. Her stall will be fully mucked out once daily in the morning and skipped out twice daily (afternoon and evening). Your mare will be groomed at least once a day (unless she is in foal) and will have fortnightly baths (weather permitting). She will have lots of attention during the day..
  • Vet and Farrier - Unless you have any special requests, our farrier will keep your horse's feet healthy and well-shod (if she is wearing shoes). Our vet will attend on your horse in an emergency and will provide routine medical care when required.
  • Equipment - All tack, rugs etc must be provided by the owner. We have some specialist equipment for the birth, but unfortunately we cannot provide everyday items such as tack and rugs.
  • Other - If there are any other considerations, such as stable toys or animal companions, then we are usually willing to accomodate them. Just let us know when you apply.
  • Price - Mare care costs anything from $250 - $650 a month depending on lots of factors such as size of horse, if you would like a quote on how much it would cost, please send me this information:
