Pastures

At Woodcroft, we have 140 acres. Out of this, we have:

All of our field contain a mixture of good grasses and low growing herbs such as chicory. Most of them are well established and provide a healthy diet for our horses as they have a mixture of weeds, herbs, seeds, grasses and hedges. We check very carefully for poisonous plants.

Almost all of our fields have a thick country hedge at one or more sides and have sturdy, well-maintained post and rail fencing when there isn't a hedge. All of the small paddocks have post and rail fencing with an electric tape passing through the top. When we divide the fields, we use electric fence.

In all of our 20-acre fields, we have a field shelter to protect against flies and harsh weather conditions. Our field troughs are filled from a supply of clean piped water and are made of galvanised iron. They are regularly cleaned out, and in winter the ice is broken from them twice a day. In one field, there is also a gravel bottomed stream which the horses can drink from. We sub-divide most of our fields and rotate them as we have a careful pasture management plan. We remove droppings daily when horses are present in the paddocks and we harrow the big fields at least once a week. We try and rest our fields at least once every 2 months, except for the paddocks where this isn't practical, but other than that we have a very careful rotation scheme. The horses are wormed before they change fields to help prevent worm infestation and new horses are always wormed before we turn them out.
