The Feed Room

Welcome to the feed room. This basically just has infomation about the types of feed our ponies get and how it is fed. Our geldings and mares are in medium/hard work, but they are ponies which makes them hardier and incredibly good-doers. They are also on good grass and we grow our hay ourselves. Therefore, we slightly underfeed them from the reccomendations and mix naked oats with original mix to give them plenty of energy, but not have them put on too much weight. We feed our stallions stud cubes mixed with oats, because we have the same problem with them fattening easily and we always have to watch out for laminitis in hardy type ponies. At Woodcroft, we also do something else different; we feed our broodmares original mix with some oats and add supplements to it. This is because we don't like to change the mare's diet when she is already going through the stress of being pregnant. Therefore, we just add a protein and vitamin supplement to their normal feed and our mares have always been quite happy.

Type Amount used per month Bags used per month (rounded up)

Stallion Cubes 255 lbs 6 bags
Young horse mix 210 lbs 5 bags
Naked Oats 375 lbs 8 bags

As well as this, we also feed some of our horses supplements owing to health, condition etc

As well as hard feed, horses always have access to clean, fresh water and good quality hay or grazing (if outside). Our horses get 2 feeds a day (morning and evening). Woodcroft has a regular routine, so the ponies get fed at the same time every day. All our feed is high quality.

We store our feed in secure galvanised containers, which no horse can get into. We do not use any type of poison or rat bait as we feel it is dangerous for horses and we have never had any problems in the past. Our horses all have a corner manger in their stables which are all clearly marked with horses name and stable number, to avoid cross-contamination or feeding the wrong feed. However, we have one or two horses who prefer to be fed from the floor and we make arrangements for that. These horses have solid rubber feed buckets which are on the floor and they get some hay piled on the floor (but most of them will eat from their hay rack when they are finished - funny that). Lastly, each horse has a specially tailored diet based on their individual size, work, temperament, condition etc.
