Woodcroft Evening Echo is a top-looking connemara gelding. He is a star in the making, and has the looks to go with his amazing ability. He is a beautiful deep golden dappled colour with shining black points and a low sock on his right hind leg. Basically, he is a top looking gelding. Howver, when we got him it was a completely different story......... we had heard about this fantastic horse that a local charity had rescued. He was very green and needed a lot of work, but he had a good jump. When we went to see him we were amazed. He was so incredibly skinny and in bad condition we could only ride him for 10 minutes. They had found him been jumped at a show, with girth galls, no condition on him at all, thrush, infected cuts, whip marks where he was beaten over jumps... it was horrific. We tried him and he was very nervous and he bolted more than once, but he jumped like a stag and we felt sorry for him. We took him home and just rested him and cared for him for the first few weeks and he gradually started putting condition on and we brought him into steady work. He was only worked on the flat for the first mont and then he started jumping low fences. He was terrible over the low fences, knocking into them, couldn't judge them, barging through them, but we persevered. Then, one day, someone had an idea. We decided to put up the fence to about 2'6" and everyone thought this was madness. But, we tried him at it and he jumped it perfectly, twice !!! We later discovered that he had only been taught how to jump high jumps and he problems judging anything less than about 2'. After we had worked with him for a few months we decided to take him to a jumping show and he went better than we had hoped, we took him steadily, without going for time and he acheived 2 double clears, earning himself a 3rd and a 2nd in jumping classes. We vowed to give half of what he wins to the SPCA for rescuing him and bringing him on and although he hasn't won any money yet, it shouldn't be too long before he is in big classes.
Echo is quick and fast, and he jumps almost anything, he often has to go into bigger classes with horses as he has no regard for any jump under 2' and quite often ploughs through the middle of them !!! He is a fabulous hunter though, and once he gets going, he sometimes even runs infront of the master (*oops*) He often shows his forward-goingness in the ring, and can do any jump at top speed, making him a serious competitor for show jumping. Echo is a lovely horse to know, he hates been trapped or anything like that, and I find it easier to leave him out all the time during the summer as he is a lot happier outside than he is in. He even wintered out when he was a two year old. Echo is an impatient horse, who will probably be one of the best pony jumpers I will ever have the pleasure to know, and despite his bad start in life, he has gone on very succesfully. |
