Moon is a lovely pony, who is one of the smallest on the yard at only 11.2hh. She has a very unusual coat which is spectacular and she is one of the few very rare dartmoor ponies. She is also probably the only roan dartmoor in EF. She has very long legs for a dartmoor and she was brought off the moors as a 3 y/o after living wild for the first few years of her life. Because of this, she is very indepedant and she was given lots of time to mature. I was initially put off by her because she was so small and I didn't really want an 11.2hh, I wanted something of about 12.2hh for jumping classes. However, I liked her coat, and when I saw her move, I knew she was well worth the $600 they were asking and I bought her with the intention to sell her on for a profit. Well, she settled in and I didn't have the heart to sell her after she'd become so well-trained, so we ended up with a new pony and she has never let us down.
Moon has a disadvantage because she is very small and there are very few 11.2 and under classes, so she has to enter with ponies a hand bigger than her. But, because she is very small and nippy, she can make the turns tighter and is very quick. Moon also has a brilliant jump for her height and the scariest moment of my life was watching her in a down and out with some ponies that were 14.2hh. She went up to about 4' which is as big as she was and got placed 3rd. Moon's temperament is something else. You know everyone says 'the littlest horses have the biggest personalities' - well that is certainly true about our Moon. She has a very stubborn personality and doesn't like doing what she is told. Anybody who gets in her way is in trouble and she frequently rolls just for the sake of getting dirty after she's had a bath. She can't stand been clean and at a show you have to watch her or she will stand in the muddiest puddles on purpose. |
