An average looking haflinger prepares to start her dressage test. It's a long hot day and everyone is bored, so they aren't really concentrating. Then, suddenly they notice this mare, her paces are smooth and steady, her coat shines in the sun, her back end is pushing her body forward with so much impulsion, her transitions are as soft as silk..... The audience is spellbound by this pony's magic. She really does captivate everyone. I went to see this 'fantastic dressage mare' and I was expecting grand prix standard. We pulled up to a row of allotments and saw a fat pony standing in the middle of the field. The grass came up to her waist, she had a semi-circle cleared infront of her and she was just eating, looking very lonely and miserable. I bought her on the spot, they wanted very little for her, but we all had doubts about this 'amazing dressage ability' We starved her out of kindness, as she was at very high risk of laminitis or heart disease. Eventually, through light work and low feed, she had lost enough weight to be turned out with the others. That was the first time we saw her movement and she has just got better. We are hoping she will reach her peak in about a year, as she is going really well at the moment and we don't want her to peak too soon. At home, 'Goldie' is very placid and anyone can ride her. She is very loving and anyone who feeds her is her best friend. She still loves food and she has a one-track mind, but some things you can never change...
